Zombie Tycoon could easily have been many things that would have been sub-par, instead it's a fun strategy title from developer Frima. Like other titles Frima has put out for the Playstation Mini service a story is always present. In this title a very good animated opening sets the plot for the game, and throughout the game's 10 levels you get alot of well written dialog.
The basic premise is you are going to take over the world with Zombies by having them attack people or takeover buildings. Ordering Zombies is so easy and not a drag on the game's speed. The Triangle, Square, and Circle buttons correspond with different colored Zombies you control, while the X button sends all Zombies out for attack. The way Zombies attack has more in common with tower defense than most strategy games, as Zombies just wail endlessly on their target till it falls or they fall.
To keep the game from being just sending out low powered Zombies endlessly you can collect equipment in every level. This not only boosts the stats of Zombies, but can add affects and even changes their look on screen for some good humor value.
Your mob of Zombies can at max hit 24 which is understandable considering this game's size but still gets to be disappointing when 24 zombies struggle to bring down one enemy AI. It's also not really excusable to have the AI get stuck on edges or walk into walls; even if the game is about the undead. This can always be fixed by dropping the move target away from the offending wall and then have the zombies go on their undead merry way.
Zombie Tycoon is $5 on the Playstation Store and a great value for Zombie and Strategy enthusiasts. The point of pure fun and laughter found in this title is a rarity amongst big titles, to have it in a Playstation Mini is a goldmine. Zombie Tycoon feels like a classic adventure you would find on PC in the early 90s with game play accurate for today.
