Widgets Odyssey is a puzzle platformer on the Playstation Mini service that may cause people to doubt its quality based on graphics. The good thing is this odd flash based graphics style doesn't hurt the game, it's a strange piece in a rather quirky game. The game play and oddly enough the game's story keeps this title afloat.
The level design is brilliant in this game. With different paths opening depending on what you do in a level, the game adds some small backtracking getting from point to point. Then you start opening new paths in the level, or my favorite from level one where you get to control a large slug to eat a new path.
The game play is broken up with 4 different playable characters on 4 different stages. Each character has their own way of traversing the stages and solving the on screen puzzles. The only character that wasn't fun to play as was the last. A character that just had a simple kick attack and akward running animation. His gimmick is he can put pipe pieces and turn them but I honestly believe any of the previous three characters could have done that. It's a dissapointment when the other three characters are so much fun to play as with their jetpack, wheels, and a spring shoes to use.
Widgets Odyssey has the art direction of a flash game until you see the beautifully animated cutscenes reminscent of old Ren & Stimpy cartoons. The humor fits in perfectly and the smooth animation looks reminscent of the highest quality you'd find on Cartoon Network. The animations alone sets this game apart from many Mini titles available.
As a $2 title, Widgets Odyssey has a very fitting price tag. Four stages for 2 dollars with animated cutscenes will keep you busy for an hour or two. Playstation Mini's aren't meant to be groundbreakers, but a small excursion from the big titles. Widgets Odyssey is not only a break but a refreshing mini adventure.
