Space Trek is one those WiiWare titles that look neat but doesn't even come close to what it appeared to be. Looking like a Star Fox clone, Space Trek is nothing like that at all. Originally an i-phone game it travels to the WiiWare service changing almost nothing about itself. In fact on the left side of the screen you can still see the i-Phone touch slider used in many games.
The game is awkward offering a static level of ugly and flat out bad rendered graphics. The main objective is to shoot down enemies and rescue comrades on the ground. Issues begin when I realized I could steer my vehicle with the wiimote but I could not move up or down. The flying gets to be pretty responsive but will never look as good as it does in the game's trailers, instead it just looks very awkward.
Shooting enemies is a bit weird as the enemies do not just break apart easily as the game tells you. Instead requiring you to pump a lot more firepower into them and watch them glitch out as they explode; sometimes enemies explode but then get stuck in the environment. Rescuing comrades actually works pretty well and as long as you slow down to a complete stop once the beaming up to your ship begins you are good.
There are a few powerups but the difference isn't too noticeable. Picking them up isn't either as the game does not give you any indication that you have grabbed them. I am not even sure you can die in this game. I tried smashing my ship into walls, lava and enemies endlessly and only bullets seemed to off me.
Space Trek is one of those cheap cash in's that can only succeed on marketplaces where demos are outlawed. This is a title that lures in gamers with promises of Star Fox to reveal a really lame Rogue Squadron knockoff. At $7 this is a ripoff to everyone and not worth the money when the same exact game is on the i-phone for $2.
