Fruit Ninja (Android) Review

Halfbrick Studios, the same team that brought you Raskulls, first found huge success in their mobile game Fruit Ninja. Fruit Ninja is one of those titles that came out of nowhere to be a smashing hit. First released for the iOS, this game was eventually brought over to the Android Market. Taking advantage of the touch screen in a fun way, this game became an instant classic.

Cutting fruit is the entire purpose of this game, and while this concept doesn’t seem that fun, it’s very addicting. Halfbrick based this title solely around the touch screen and its capabilities. You use your finger as a sword to slash through all the fruit tossed up for you while you avoid striking bombs. There are many different unlockable swords that will change the color of the trail that you leave. Along with swords to unlock, there are also numerous backdrops. Through the online leaderboard service, Feint, you can compare your scores with those of your friends.

Fruit Ninja doesn’t really have background music but it does have ambience. You hear noises like birds chirping, water running and other natural sounds playing as you slice away. If your phone is fast enough, however, you can play your own music instead of listening to the sounds of the game. The sound effects are done very well in this title and there are even special sound effects whenever you get any power-ups. The fruit, sword and bombs all have sound effects whenever they are sliced or, in the sword’s case, slashing. While the sound effects are repeated, they are not annoying.

The graphics in this game are about average for a mobile Android game but are nonetheless appealing. The fruit all look very well designed as well as the bombs. The swords are never seen but the trails are pretty enough to add to the overall look of Fruit Ninja without being intrusive to the player’s vision of the fruit. The addition of selectable backdrops really adds to Fruit Ninja by allowing you to change it up every once in a while to keep it from becoming stale.

Fruit Ninja is a classic title that can be enjoyed by nearly anyone. The game play is very basic but it is addicting nonetheless. The graphics are average and the sound is pleasing. The added leaderboards add to the competition aspect and make it even more fun. Coming in at the low price of $1.26 this game is a must buy for any gamers on the go.
