One day, a stranger stole the “Golden Bomberman Statue” which stood as a symbol of peace in Town. The local hero Bomberman, was ordered to find the stolen statue. During which time he encountered a stranger whom he believes to be the thief. As he follows this thief, Bomberman is lead into a warp hole. Now, he must find the statue and escape from the dark perils of this underworld.
During his long gaming life we have seen Bomberman take many different shapes and forms, from his beginnings as a little round blob that blessed our arcade machines to now, where we see a new and improved detailed Bomberman complete with a helmet, hands and even shoes in a detailed world of brickwork interlaced with vibrating barrels and balloon enemies….Scary stuff.
Gamers will have to guide Bomberman through this underworld by placing bombs to blow up enemies and bricks in order to find secret doors that will lead him to the next stage in his quest to retrieve the sacred Golden Bomberman.
The game levels are set in a grid like square packed full of bricks, solid walls and enemies. A nice feature of its gameplay is that every time you restart a level it is always different and so there’s no learning of your enemy’s moves, it’s all based on your skill to navigate Bomberman around. This version is very obvious and so the learning curve for this game is around 5 minutes. This is added to by the fact that the controls are so simple: the ‘5’ key is the only one that you will need to use other than the directional buttons as this is the button which lays a bomb.
The graphics for this game are moderate and probably as much as you would expect from an arcade classic gone portable. As I have already mentioned Bomberman himself is far more elaborate with a shaded helmet, hands, shoes and the developers have also a small sense of 3D using shadows and shading which becomes very apparent as Bomberman walks around because in this version he actually looks and turns depending on where he is going. There are also now flame style explosions that emanate from the bombs as they explode which sounds good in principal and would work nicely; if only they had made them look better than the graphics for a Sega Master System. The levels themselves could be a lot better because they are very static, flat and unclear due to the sheer amount of linear lines and grid like patterns, and I think that this does hinder the gameplay slightly which is unfortunate.
The game does feature some nice music which is good quality and suits the game perfectly but with any game which loops the same piece of music over and over again it does start to grate on you after a while. The sound FX themselves are as good as they need to be for an arcade style game like this, and work well within the context of the game.
Bomberman does have some extensive features such as the fact that it has 40 levels and a crazy boss to beat at the end of each stage. It also supports the Bluetooth Multiplayer function where two opponents can battle each other in five unique 2 player arenas. Thankfully unlike so many other arcade games Bomberman features a save mode which is helpful especially when playing on the move!
I found this game very addictive but the loose story mode doesn’t do anything for me except to frustrate me when trying to the play the game, having said that it is great fun especially when playing an opponent in one of the five unique levels via Bluetooth.
On the whole it is a good remake of an old classic but lacks in some areas, To me this game feels a tad unfinished especially when I look at the half hearted attempts at making an explosion and an aesthetically pleasing level. The powers there so why not use it. I would recommend this game as it is terribly addictive and fun even though it does look a bit dodgy here and there. Bomberman takes a small tumble over his own bomb, silly bugger!
